Note that the environment is not all simple and straight and flat, as gyms are. The outdoors is very "chaotic," "fractal," complex. The wet conditions make it even more so! We need to adjust movement, technique, attention to fit the complex, changing conditions. Mindfulness matters.
When the temperature goes from 85º-95º F down, in a few days, to 54ºF, we feel colder than if the temperature has been 54ºF or if the temperature has gone from -20ºF up to 54ºF. So in Houston, some folks (not me) wear heavy jackets and boots when the temperature goes from summer to the 60s. LOL. This 54ºF weather helps me transition from humid Houston 95s-105s to the sometimes-cold days we get in the 20s or 30s.
Get ready in the real world, because in disasters and emergencies and real life, you take the world as it is: Hurricane Harvey was not all Champagne and Perrier; fires are not all peaches and cream; terrorist attacks are not baseball games or spa weekends.
Don't succumb to all comfort and convenience. Cowboy or cowgirl up. Be able to travel back and forth between, in and out of, hardship and home. Take advantage of technology, but don't let comfort kill.
Make yourself, in mind and body, stronger, more resilient, more anti-fragile, more adaptable, more confident, more fit to survive and thrive and be happy in the world.
To the small few out there who say I (and those like me) am crazy: no, I'm not crazy, I'm just not a wuss. Look in the mirror, be honest -- then get out and make yourself better; you will then do yourself, your friends, your family, and the world a favor. And, hey, if you want to up your game, you got our support. All you gotta do is step forward. And ask.
